Back in 2004, we welcomed our very first delivery of Fairtrade Certified Coffee into our humble roastery. We were a small family business just starting out, with access to only two Fairtrade coffees on the market. Each delivery of green beans and each dispatch of roasted coffee felt like a triumph in those early days.

Guided by our hearts and values, we knew this journey was never about shortcuts. We believed in the fundamental right of coffee farmers to be paid and rewarded fairly for their hard work. For generations, farmers in remote communities were at the mercy of opportunistic buyers, who dictated prices without transparency, often below the cost of production.

We understood that if Fairtrade was to grow, communities needed to see real benefits. As cooperatives invested Fairtrade premiums back into their communities, others saw the impact: access to education, better resources, and more sustainable futures. It was this ripple effect that allowed us to expand our range and source from an even broader spectrum of coffee-growing communities.

Our instincts were right. By staying true to our values and working closely with our growers, we’ve helped pave the way for Australian consumers to embrace a fairer future for coffee farmers.

Now, 21 years on, there’s so much to celebrate!

Each year, we are provided with an annual summary of how our commitment has impacted communities in the 12 months before.

Here’s a glimpse of the impact report for 2023.

Montville Coffee’s Fairtrade Impact:

  • Sourced from 19 producer organisations
  • Supported 76,856 farmers in our supply chain.
  • Empowered 12% women farmers within that network.
  • Contributed $36,690 to Fairtrade premiums, enabling growers to invest in their communities.

Here’s to 21 years of partnership, passion, and purpose.
